Whether as part of woodlands, hedgerows or hill top clumps, or as single trees surrounded by fields, trees play an important role in establishing the uniqueness of the Somerset landscape.

Somerset is also the home of many ancient trees which add character and distinctiveness to the landscape. These trees can often play a vital supporting role in Somerset’s biodiversity, as the resting, breeding and feeding sites for a range of important species. Many of these trees are considered so important they are granted Tree Preservation Orders, which mean they cannot be felled or pruned without the consent of Somerset Council, unless the tree is dead, dying or dangerous.
However, there are many other trees in Somerset which still require the services of a skilled tree surgeon, and we have been providing tree surgery services to the Somerset area for over a decade.
Crowns
There are a variety of ways in which we can shape and improve the crown of the tree.
Crown Thinning removes some of the branch structure of the tree without changing its overall outline. This lets more light pass through the tree but it can also reduce the surface area of vulnerable trees, help to minimise their water uptake, and/or remove dead, dying, diseased, rubbing or crossing limbs.
During a Crown Lift, we will remove the lower branches to create an even height. This allows more light under the tree and can improve access around the tree if it’s near to a path or drive.
Crown Reduction involves pruning the canopy of the tree in an even manner reducing the overall size and impact as well as the effects upon it from nature. If done sensitively, it can leave the tree in a pleasing form.
This can sometimes be a solution for ‘problem trees’ which does not involve felling the tree entirely.
Dismantling
Sometimes a tree needs to be removed from a location where traditional felling would pose a hazard to the surrounding property. In situations like this we scale the tree and remove the limbs one by one, lowering them safely to ground level with ropes.
Felling
Most residential properties do not have sufficient space to allow traditional tree felling. For that reason we make use of winches and ropes to pull the tree in a controlled direction.
Stump Removal
After felling or dismantling you can often be left with an unsightly stump. Where the stump cannot be removed with a winch our stump grinding machines can turn it into wood chip.
Garden Waste Removal
We will remove all waste from your garden or site and will leave it tidy.
As part of our service, Hawes Arborists can also log up any timber to provide you with a valuable source of fuel which is increasingly more expensive to buy these days.
We recycle or compost any waste where we can and our woodchip can be used for generating electricity.
Tree Planting
At Hawes Arborists, we offer a range of tree planting services from the design and implementation of entire planting schemes, hedge planting of all lengths and species to planting a single tree.
